HERBERT Abel, Private 2625, 12th Gloucestershire Regiment killed in action 5th May 1917 aged 33. Son of William and Mary of Quenington Road, Ampney St Mary, Gloucestershire Brother of James of Mill Cottages, Whelford, Gloucestershire. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.

HOPKINS Tom Private [Driver] 89168, 3rd Battery, 47th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery killed in action 26th November 1917 aged 28. Son of Frederick and Martha of 7 Barton Lane, Cirencester. Native of Cirencester and is buried at the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.

HUMPHRIES Cecil William, Private 24, 1st Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment killed 19th May 1915 aged 24. Son of Thomas and Augusta Alma Humphries of 5 Barton Lane, Cirencester, Glos. Buried at Railway Dugout Burial Ground (Transport Farm), West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

LARNER Ernest Frederick Private 10841, 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers killed in action 20th October 1914 aged 19. Son of Thomas Francis and Margaret Ellen of Ackermaid Lane, Ampney Crucis [note BMD Marriage, 1894, shows Thomas Francis Larner to Margaret Ellen J nee Vines] Native of Ampney Crucis and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.

POOLE Richard, Private 51296, 3rd Worcestershire Regiment killed in action 27th May 1918 aged 19. Son of Richard and Jane of Ampney Crucis. Native of Ampney Crucis and is buried at Marfaux British Cemetery, Marne, France.

ROBINS William, Private 14582, 2nd Grenadier Guards killed in action 20th September 1914 aged 22. Son of James and Martha of Barnsley Village Gloucestershire Native of Dry Lees, Cirencester, Gloucestershire and is buried at Guards Grave, Villers Cotterets Forest, France.

SOUL Ernest, Driver 48956, A Battery, 16th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery killed in action 25th March 1918 aged 28. Son of Edwin and Mary Jane nee Frayling of Knowl Farm Cottage, Ampney Crucis Native of Winstone and is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France. The memorial has his unit as the Royal Horse Artillery.

SYMONDS Frederick Charles, Private 23273, 4th Grenadier Guards died of wounds 27th September 1916 aged 21. Son of Christmas and Emily of Ampney Crucis and brother of Philip who also fell. Buried at Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbe, Somme, France.

SYMONDS Philip Henry, Private 21087, 3rd Wiltshire Regiment died 31st March 1917 aged 18. Son of Christmas and Emily of Ampney Crucis and brother of Frederick who also fell. Buried at Weymouth Cemetery, Dorset.

WHITEMAN Silas John Private, 7477, A Squadron, 1st Kings Dragoon Guards killed in action 2nd June 1915 aged 24. Son of Silas and Mary of 40 Purley Road, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Buried at Sanctuary Wood Cemetery, Ieper, Belgium.

DORAN John, Sergeant PY/13550, 2nd Royal Marine Light Infantry, Royal Navy Division. Born 9th September 1887 at Whitehaven, Cumberland enlisted 10th October 1905 and died 21st July 1916 aged 28. Son of William and Barbara of near Pound Tree, Ampney Crucis and a few houses from Frank Large who also fell. Husband of Clarice Doran of 13 Cheyne Place, Chelsea, London. Commemorated on a wooden memorial in the Church of the Holy Rood, Ampney Crucis and is buried at Bully-Grenay Communal Cemetery, British Extension, France.

BARTON Wilfred, Lance Corporal 1887, Royal Gloucestershire Hussars, killed in action 21st August 1915 aged 32. Son of Edward and Jane of The Knowle, Ampney Crucis. Buried at Green Hill Cemetery, Turkey.

EDWARDS John Charles, Corporal 26534, 10th Gloucestershire Regiment killed in action 13th March 1917 aged 25. Son of James H and Ellen of the Post Office, Ampney Crucis, his father was Blacksmith. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

LARGE Frank William, Corporal 8383,1st Gloucestershire Regiment died 9th May 1915 aged 28. Son of Albert and Mary E of near The Lake, Ampney Crucis. Buried at Cabret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.

BARNFIELD Sydney George Private 33004, 2/4th Gloucestershire Regiment who died of wounds 21st April 1917 aged 24. Son of Thomas and Ada of 60 Ryecroft Street, Gloucester. Commemorated on the memorial of Alfred George and Sarah Ann Barnfield at Ampney Crucis Cemetery and is buried at Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, No3, Ieper, Belgium. His brother Albert Wilfrid Private 31806, 7th Gloucestershire Regiment also died on the 2nd April 1919 aged 25. He is buried at Batoum British Cemetery and is also commemorated on the Haidar Pasha Memorial, Turkey.

COOPER William Ernest, Gunner 2170, Royal Field Artillery, D Battery, 59th Brigade. Killed in action 23rd September 1917 aged 26. Son of James William and Martha Cooper of Hudnall, Little Gaddesden, Berkhamsted, Herts. Native of Southsea, Hants. Buried at Gwalia Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

FREEBURY Reginald Charles, Private 17240, 1st, Somerset Light Infantry died 1st July 1916 on the Somme, aged 21. Son of James and Elizabeth Selina nee Sandle of 72 Whiteman Street, Swindon, Wiltshire. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.

GEEVES Frederick, Private 52158, 3/6th reserve Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment died 29th October 1918 aged 30. Son of Daniel and Eliza of Ampney Crucis. Buried at Ste Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, France.

WHITMAN Henry William Private 2728, 1st Gloucestershire Regiment died of wounds 4th January 1915. Husband of Fanny Sampson, formerly Whitman of Withington, Andoversford, Gloucestershire. Buried at Bethune Town Cemetery, France.

LEYLAND Reginald Hamilton, [known as Rex], Lieutenant Colonel, Commander of the 2nd Rifle Brigade killed in action 24th September 1918 age 33. Son of Frederick Dawson Leyland and Sybil Lake nee Beadle of 79 Cromwell Road, South Kensington and husband of Helen Mary Leyland of Ampney Crucis. Buried at Roclincourt Military Cemetery France.

Lieutenant Colonel Rex Hamilton1 was killed in action by a shell around 5am on 24 September 1918, while he was visiting part of the line. He had only been the battalion's commander since June that year. That month every battalion of the 8th Division needed to take on a new commanding officer after all the previous ones had become casualties during the previous month's fighting on the Aisne and the subsequent retreat.
